, everyone. it's tuesday, it's december the 4th. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time now 6:00. >>> new this morning firefighters battled a massive house fire in petaluma overnight. crews were called out just after 3:30 this morning to sadler lane and take a look. those flames completely destroyed the home. officials say the home is occupied but no one was home at the time. the cause is still under investigation. there's no indication to make the fire suspicious. but pretty impressive flames. >> what a fire. my gosh. >> the big muni mess has stranded thousands of passengers is over at this hour. >> the transit system is recovering from a power outage and an accident with some serious injuries, as well. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in san francisco where power in the subway is back on at this hour. good morning. >> reporter: that's good news for morning commuters. again there's basically sorted out a bit of the mess. all muni lines are back on track. muni told us that this was caused by a power outage they had last night. the electrical problem happened as commuters were h
us with the latest. >>> good morning, frank and michelle, originally authorities issued a warning, a tsunami 2 meters high could hit the coast. the warning was lifted two hours after the quake hit. thankfully this was nothing compared to the quake yesterday. this quake struck out of the northeastern coast of the miyagi miyagi. one city reported a minor injuries, taking a look at the video, you can see it caused continuous shaking in some areas. buildings in tokyo were reportedly swaying for at least several minutes. this quake did rattle nerves in a country still recovering from the devastating earthquake and tsunami in march 2011. miyagi was one one of the areas that suffered the worst of the destruction. that quake fueled, at least 60 people died and cars boats and homes were swept away. as of right now, tokyo electric power says there are no problems at any of its nuclear plants. frank michelle. >> and we understand that you have family in japan. have you been able to talk to them at all and are they okay. >> that's right. i have my parents and aunt and uncle are stationed in j

this morning with more on the expected weather delays. good morning, cate. >> good morning, michelle. >> reporter: mother nature is already making her mark here in the bay area but i want to show you now that things are pick up here at sfo. you can see the travelers are already standing in line. i just got off the phone with an airport representative who told me coastal flights could be canceled because of that impending storm so check in with those flights before you get here. we are also seeing ripple effects from the winter storm in chicago here at our airports. aviation officials say more than 350 flights out of o'hare international airport and 150 out of midway were canceled. sfo reps say as a result, it's delayed a few flights in the bay area. we'll have our own weather setbacks here at home, as well. rain is slowly moving into our region. so unfortunately, the national weather service says this could complicate things for travelers. >> we wanted to avoid big crowds. we are still waiting but i can see it now, it's already packed. >> reporter: those potential weather delays coul
morning, it is tuesday, december 11. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 6:31 now. we begin this hour with some breaking news down in daly city. >> a car goes over at cliff as skyline boulevard. let's get to elizabeth in the traffic center. >> tow crews, emergency crews, everyone is out there right now working to get this car out of the ditch. this is the area we're talking about in daly city. a stretch of highway 35 remains closed at last check. one southbound lane of highway 35. right there approaching john daly. this is video from the scene taken by one of our news crews. they are working, the whole 100 feet of cable is needed to get that car. one person major injuries. chp rescued two other people after that suv went over the cliff around 4:30 this morning. we talked to an officer on scene about why this is taking a while to clear. >> we're just investigating the collision, taking measurements of the scene. we have one of two lanes of skyline closed for unknown duration until they finish the investigation. and talking to the parties involved in the colli
's wednesday, december 18. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm brian hackney. frank is off this week. time now 6:30. >>> santa clara county firefighters made an unexpected discovery at the scene of a small fire a body. anne makovec joins from us campbell. >> reporter: firefighters have left the scene but there are still a lot of questions about a mysterious death. i'm in campbell. the storage unit was on fire and is around the corner from the building here behind me. here's a closer look at that unit. the fire broke out at 1:00 this morning. somebody reported smoke coming from the storage unit. they found a body inside the unit after they put out the small fire. they say the body is an adult. police won't say how the person died, if it was before or during the fire. they are calling it an undetermined death investigation not a murder investigation. >> at this point we don't have specific evidence to call it a homicide. obviously, we're looking at all the different possibilities and once we get all the questions answered we'll be able to better determine what happened here this morning. >> report
'm michelle griego. time now is 6:00. >>> we're following some breaking news right now out of san francisco's ocean view district. >> crews on the scene of a big fire burning near a historic firehouse. we're hearing reports of more fire companies being called out to respond. the fire is burning in an apartment complex on 119 broad street. 10 people have been evacuated. it's burning next door to engine company 33, according to a website, the victorian style building dates back to 1896. we have a crew on the way. we'll get you the latest as soon as we hear it. >>> a loud boom on the peninsula after a bomb squad dead nature volatile materials. authorities found 30-year-old chemicals inside a san mateo house yesterday. the acid and ether were both too dangerous to move so they detonated the chemicals on the front lawn. no one was hurt. but the house suffered major damage. >> it was significant. it damaged the windows in front of her home. >> officers evacuated the block at least 500 households were notified of the controlled detonation. >> investigators in cupertino were trying to figure out wh
'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 6:31. guess what, the rain is back and the doppler is lit up this morning. >> yes, it is. it's making for a wet wednesday commute for all of those people trying to get to work this morning, lawrence. >> yeah. looks like some very heavy rainfall showing up in parts of the bay area right now. this is from berkeley shot a little bit earlier this morning. the rain really coming down there. but we're seeing more rain all around the bay area. high-def doppler radar showing you very strong band of moisture making its way along the peninsula sliding into parts of the east bay. it should be ending. we'll tell you when coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you. >>> new details about a deadly shooting near a berkeley school. we just learned that the victim is a woman in her 40s. and she was riding her bike when she was shot. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is at the police station right now with what may have led up to the shooting. cate. >> reporter: michelle, they aren't exactly sure of a mo
with video. >> reporter: frank and michelle, that gushing water actually slammed into the scaffolding of the building behind me. you can see that damage there. you can see part of the beam has been bent in and that's why the roads are blocked, because authorities are right now trying to assess if that scaffolding i safe. video from earlier shows gushing watertown 40 feet high. water at up to 40 feet. they were trying to pull over a driver for a minor traffic violation, he fled and crashed into a hydrant causing the water break. police took the driver into custody suspected of dui and we don't know at this point if the driver sustained any injuries. back out live, essex street off folsom is blocked. if you are going to the bay bridge, you have to find a different route. a firefighter said that they are going to assess the safety of that scaffolding and once they find out it is safe they will reopen these roads hopefully that can be soon. reporting live in san francisco, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >>> an on-ramp to the bay bridge is closed not making many morning commuters happy. >> no. not
take firefighters to respond. good morning, cate. >> good morning, michelle. starting next month the city of clayton won't have a fire station at all that. means the nearest station will be 3.5 miles away in concord. last night's vote came after voters failed to pass measure q, a $75 a year parcel tax. if it passed it would have prevented that's closures. the closures will save the fire protection district $3 m the district faces a $17 million deficit. it says it spent its reserves. for neighbors in clayton, the savings don't outweigh the costs it will mean for the city. >> it's hitting us at a tender spot with us because of what we have been through and we in it. others will unfortunately have to go through it. >> kelly's home was destroyed in a fire in clayton a year and a half ago. she says her son narrowly escaped death because firefighters were minutes away. she is worried the next fire in the town could be worse. the district says they understand the concerns of neighbors and they are going to work to redistribute their resources so response times won't be affected. cate ca
'm michelle griego. the san mateo bridge opened all lanes after a deadly accident caused slowing for several hours. gianna has the latest. >> you know, chp said 6:00 they were hoping to have everything reopened and just like clockwork all lanes are now open westbound san mateo bridge. this accident happened at about 3:30 this morning. it was towards the peninsula side as you head into foster city. you're looking live at church. so delays are improving but it's still a backup. we were seeing delays. this two-car crash was reported just as a normal incident at first but again, one person was pronounced dead at the scene. so they have that closure down for quite some time. hopefully things are improving. all lanes are now open. you should use the dumbarton bridge just for the next maybe 15, 20 minutes. things should be good after 6:30. let's jump to the maps. we have a new trouble spot to report westbound 580 at high street. getting word of an accident where a vehicle may have hit a pedestrian in the road. no word yet if it's blocking the main lines of the freeway or if the accident happened on
'm michelle griego. time now just about 6:30. some developing news from oakland. police are at work at two crime scenes after a total of three people were killed overnight. about 1:00 this morning two people were shot to death in the 800 block of mead avenue in west oakland. then at about 2:30, one person was killed in a stabbing on walnut street in the seminary area of oakland. police are investigating the possibility the killings are related. >>> also in oakland, one person is dead from a collision involving a car fleeing a traffic stop. the driver of a bmw took off after police pulled the car over for speeding late last night. just a minute later, it crashed into a lincoln continental that was turning on interstate 580 from 98th avenue. a passenger was killed in the back seat of the lincoln. the bmw's driver was caught after running away. >>> 6:30 now. an 18-year-old shot at an east bay bart station out of surgery this morning and is expected to survive. bart police found the victim in the parking lot at the pittsburg-bay point station just a few minutes before 7:00 last night. quickly

@captioncolorado.com >>> good morning, everyone. it's monday, december 3. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 6:31 now. and the rain is over for now. but boy, what a mess to clean up now. >> no kidding! one of the biggest is a large sinkhole on mountain view drive in lafayette. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington explains it's a road hazard as well as a health and safety issue. elissa? >> yeah, good morning. this is some of the most extreme storm damage we have seen. a 20-foot sinkhole that opened in the lafayette neighborhood that's right near the downtown. and look how close it got to some homes. it's practically in this house's front yard. now, this happened yesterday afternoon following some heavy rain. the storm overflowed a creek which then saturated the ground. that eroded the street and caused part of it to suddenly drop. nobody was hurt, but that sinkhole is just steps away from homes and it's caused some very big hazards. the sinkhole's blocking two lanes but also put pressure on a water main so some homes had their water cut off last night. at least one house was wit

. >> michelle griego has the morning off. >>> new this morning search and rescue teams have been scouring a creek all looking for a missing man. >> we are along the madeira creek. kate joins with us the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. officers say they have suspended the search until daylight. that's when they'll come back to search the area, this after three hours of scouring the area by the creek. the search started at 1:00 this morning. officers tried to pull over a man on college avenue near the college of ma rain. police say they were investigating the suspect for drunk driving. that's when officers say that male suspect jumped out of a car, hopped over a fence and went into the creek. >> the driver jumped over the fence into the creek. the officers began to follow along the swiftly moving creek for about a hundred yards encourageing the driver to come out of the creek to swim over to him. the driver didn't, swam in the opposite direction. they fold as long as they could. >> reporter: chief master son said the concern was the cold waters of the creek. he said offic
